As we evidently know, emotional distress can act like an obstacle, a situation we tend to run
away from simply because we fear that it will not only influence our disposition but affect our
ability to keep up with daily tasks. Also emotional distress can be burdening, causing an inability to concentrate and work, however, it can be dealt with if we tend to shape our mindset.
When it comes to distress, a lot of the mental pressure stems from unconscious thoughts, hence, trying to view the glass as half full rather than half empty can essentially help relieve that stress. As someone who has been subjected to emotional pressures and the shackles of absolutistic thinking, I have realised that as an individual if we consciously convince ourselves that everything will be okay even if it seems unlikely, subconsciously our mind pushes us to try and excel. Furthermore, I am someone who has struggled a lot, when initially I was unable to push myself to work when I was going through emotional distress.
However, it should be noted that working when under emotional distress is not easy; It is a
matter of acknowledging what that emotional distress means and how we can deal with it.
Emotional distress is never easy but sometimes we need to understand that time heals, it may seem significant right now but pain will not last.
Therefore, it is better to focus on our growth, aspirations, goals and happiness especially at times when it is difficult to remain positive. Some of the tips when under emotional distress include:
- Acknowldge your emotions and what they mean; don’t ignore them.
- Understand that pain and emotional distress won’t last forever
- Always give yourself time to heal; your health matters more than anything
- Take breaks to focus on your mental health
- Surround yourself with people that make you feel better; don’t settle for someone who
doesn’t value you
To reiterate, as much as we hate it, emotional distress is a part of what it means to be human
and it is up to every individual whether despite the burden that befalls on them, they address such tiresome situations with their head held high. It is not easy at all, however, it is stress and pain which makes us stronger and years from now, when we look back at all the hurdles that we have been strong enough to cross, it provides us with a sense of accomplishment truly realising our strength and value within life. Life can never be easy and if it is then how can we say that we have truly lived?
Our life will become a book mark for those after us, making them see that
despite all the struggles that we encountered, we didn’t deviate from our goals and our path to success. Is that not what we want? That's the unfortunate reality that at the end of the day, our struggles are who we are and it is always up to us to dictate whether they take it down or if we strive and encounter those struggles with a smile, until that becomes reality. Soon, as time heals, our smiles that were not genuine will become the most genuine thing about it.
As someone who enjoys challenges and struggles, I originally ran away, brushed them under the rug until I realised how strong they make me and it is up to me to decide what happens in my life. So, emotional distress is not a path to failure, instead its marathon to success. The destination seems blurry but as you get closer and face obstacles, it all starts to make sense.
